The importance attached to the role of young people in the future development and well being of the Sultanate is indicated by the fact that twice in the last 25 years, in 1983 and 1993, the years have been declared Years of Youth. A national census was help in Dec 1993, the first in the Sultanate, and the final figures published in early 1995 show that 54% of the total Omani population are under the age 15 years.

Physical fitness has been officially encouraged in the years since the accession of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, and sport is now hugely popular among the youth of the country.

Most modern sports are now being played in the Sultanate, the oldest of which is hockey, dating back to the last century, when it was introduced from India.
